“My name is Felicia Bartley and I am a Tiwa woman from the Pueblo of Isleta. In my opinion, Indigenous Peoples’ Day signals the end of an era that promoted the Pristine Myth, which is the belief that the Americas were untouched by human hands prior to European contact and colonization. I also think Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a great starting conversation with folks who are unfamiliar with Native North American history. It is a reminder that despite the attempted genocides, forced removals and ethnocide by foreign governments, we (Indigenous people) are thriving and continuing our ancestors’ fights toward mutual respect. The day serves as a way to move from Eurocentric narratives about the founding of the United States, and to center Indigenous people as the true founders and stewards of North American society. Of course, I want to acknowledge that these conversations reach far beyond North America, but my perspective is rooted in my homeland within North America.” Felicia is a first-year public humanities master’s student and a Native American and Indigenous Studies Initiative (NAISI) Fellow. In 2016, the Brown faculty voted to designate the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, to recognize the contributions of Indigenous people/Native Americans to our community and culture and to foster a more inclusive community. With the pandemic making it impossible for visual arts to be experienced as they once were, @baibrownu is finding innovative ways to display art. The Granoff Center is currently showing “State of Urgency,” a collection of protest art prints designed by members of Print Like You Give A Damn Press!, a local collective operated through the Providence-based community art nonprofit @as220providence. The dozens of prints that line the walls of the Granoff's Cohen Gallery speak to critical issues animating the country's current social unrest, including police brutality, racial injustice and the importance of enabling every eligible American to vote in the upcoming election.

When an introductory fluid mechanics class couldn’t be taught in person this fall, @brownengineering Professor Roberto Zenit enlisted a group of undergraduates to develop “home labs.” The idea was to think of items that students are likely to have handy in their houses, apartments or dorms, and use them to perform experiments that drive home key fluid mechanics concepts. ⠀ ⠀ For example, a ping-pong ball suspended in the airstream from a hairdryer can demonstrate drag force and turbulent jets. ⠀ Read more about this and other experiments via the link in our bio. ⠀ ⠀

This past weekend, sophomores, juniors and seniors moved into their residence halls as part of the second stage of Brown’s phased plan to resume in-person undergraduate activity.
