This week in the lead up to day, we're highlighting a few of our diverse approaches to addressing poverty.
Girls across the Global South are vulnerable to poverty and exploitation and face limited job opportunities, creating challenging transitions into adulthood. BRAC’s flagship Empowerment and Livelihoods for Adolescents (ELA) program equips girls and young women with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive by offering safe spaces and mentor-led, community-supported programming. Through social empowerment, education, and economic empowerment, adolescent girls gain the self-confidence to reach their full potential.

Panic buying, migration to rural areas, and lockdowns have forced up the price of coarse rice.
Farmers have little incentive to sell with gargantuan costs and necessity for self sustenance, and some retailers and wholesalers are creating artificial shortages to recoup losses incurred. The millers are stuck in the middle.

Around the world people are grappling with the effects of COVID-19. But while the pandemic’s reach is global, its impact is diverse and disproportionate – and Rohingya women are among the most affected.
Rohingya sheltering in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, who already lack regular access to food, clean water, and a steady income, now face the arrival of the coronavirus in the camps.
To prevent further spread of the virus, lockdowns are in place and hundreds of thousands of Rohingya are being asked to stay inside – and reports of gender-based violence are surging. It’s a triple burden on Rohingya women that no one should be asked to bear.
