Houston’s Rothko Chapel is open again following a meticulous update by Architecture Research Office. Designed collaboratively by patrons, abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko, and local architects Howard Barnstone and Eugene Aubry, the chapel is an unassuming octagonal structure with windowless beige brick walls. It is both a site-specific art installation constructed to house 14 enormous bespoke paintings from Rothko’s dark period and a consecrated interfaith chapel with a mission of promoting civil rights.

When Columbus, Ohio–based Outpost Office submitted its design for this year’s Ragdale Ring Competition, it was mid-March and the country was headed toward lockdown. The proposal, which comprised little more than colorful lines on the ground, turned out to be perfectly suited for the challenges both its designers and Ragdale would face in creating a performance space in COVID-19 times.

Designed by Steven Holl Architects, the Kinder Building—a new expansion on the Museum of Fine Arts Houston—advances a novel solution to age-old problems in the corner of coastal Texas—stifling heat and intense daylight. Rising on a trapezoidal site, the new wing is a bulwark of light-gray structural concrete and milky concave glass. Seven forecourts—“porous gardens,” per the architects—chip away at the considerable massing, providing much-needed shade at perimeter entry point.

For The Commons, Tulane University’s new campus hub, WEISS/MANFREDI designed a glass facade that avoids clichés despite using some conventional materials. The angular, building shimmers in the New Orleans light, its mirrored surface broken up by chunky stripes and iridescent hues. It’s hardly a typical glass box, but the building’s distinctive look belies its use of a humble material: clear glass.
