Our team of international experts are hard at work with the jurying process for the 2020 edition of the Architecture MasterPrize. Needless to say, it is a difficult task, choosing the winners from a wealth of incredible entries. Watch this space for more details of when the winners will be announced!⠀
⠀
As the jurying continues, here’s another chance to see our Interior Design of the Year, 2019: Infinite Buildings — Buildings Inside Buildings. Also winning in our Interior Design/Exhibition category, this stunning design by Jean-Maxime Labrecque is smart, innovative, unique and beautiful.⠀
⠀
Infinite Buildings — Buildings Inside Buildings. In addition to the exterior makeover of their residence, two art-collector clients instructed their architect to create an installation that would occupy the entire lower floor. The principal aim of this installation is to transform a claustrophobic space into a generous volume, without altering the building’s structure. This newly-created boundless space becomes a reflection about the world of tomorrow and its architecture.⠀
⠀
⠀
⠀
Today is the day! Our Extended Final Deadline comes to an end at midnight, August the 31st, 2020. After this, there will be no further extension. If you have a design or project you wish to enter into this year’s competition, or have started an entry and have yet to finish it, please do so today to avoid disappointment.⠀
⠀
Here is another look at our Architectural Design of the Year 2019, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland. Sensitively designed by @BasaltArchitects, this is a simply stunning project, by a company who seamlessly understand their subject matter, taking great care to preserve and, indeed, enhance the outrageous natural beauty of the Blue Lagoon. In short, The Retreat is an exceptional winner and a true joy. Delicious photos by @giorgiopossentiphotography⠀
⠀
The Retreat provides a unique way to experience Iceland´s ancient bathing culture. The task faced by the architects was to push the boundaries between nature, architecture and experience, to shape a place where guests feel a connection to Icelandic nature. Built directly into a 751-year-old lava flow in the heart of the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, the Retreat encompasses a subterranean spa, geothermal lagoon and 62-suite hotel encircled by the Blue Lagoon’s seawaters. Treasures of the site — the mineral-rich water, the rugged lava and centuries-old moss — become the focal point of every space in the building.⠀

Our 2020 Architecture MasterPrize competition will close to entries at the end of August 2020. There will be no further extension to the deadline, so if you have a project you wish to enter, or an unfinished entry, please head to our website as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Needless to say, we are very excited to see which projects our expert jurors pick for this year’s competition!⠀
⠀
Winning in our Architectural Design / Restoration & Renovation category, Birks Hotel: Restoring a Montreal Icon is a beautiful original design, lovingly and tenderly restored by NEUF architect(e)s and perfectly demonstrating how modern methods and technologies can ensure older buildings have a much longer life. Atmospheric and luxurious photography by Adrien Williams.⠀
⠀
Designed by renowned Montreal architect Edward Maxwell, the Birks building was originally built in 1894 for the Henry Birks & Sons jewellery store. Partner architect Anh Le Quang and Marion Thiébaux from NEUF architect(e)s worked with designer Nicole Vekemans to highlight the remarkable character of this historic building while updating its architecture to correct deficiencies. Great attention to detail was paid not only to aesthetic elements but also to vital components that would ensure the building’s longevity.⠀

Designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects, Medieval Mile Museum won in our Architectural Design/Heritage Architecture category and shows how beautiful and practical restoration can be, mixing the old with new technologies and showcasing both the ancient architecture and the modern, all the while perfectly balancing the two.⠀
⠀
St. Mary’s Church in Kilkenny has been converted into the Medieval Mile Museum. The project combines sensitive restoration and contemporary design to an exemplary standard. The project became an experiment in the use of archaeology to define an architectural solution. New elements are made of timber and lead. The project worked with the nature of the building, leaving exposed a large section of the original medieval timber roof. Archaeological excavations revealed the presence of extant foundations under the earth. New structures were placed on these, developing a sequence of internal spaces.⠀
⠀
@McCulloughMulvinArchitects is a Dublin-based practice working both internationally and in Ireland. Their projects express a deeply held ethos that one of the purposes of architecture is to explore place and time in context, whether that context is a city, a site, or an existing building. Their understanding of, and respect for, history is evident in a portfolio of work rich with story, and in a bravely contemporary approach to shape-making. McCullough Mulvin Architects was founded in 1986 and is led by directors Niall McCullough, Valerie Mulvin, Ruth O’Herlihy, Corán O’Connor and Ronan O’Connor.⠀
⠀
If you have a project to enter into this year’s Architecture MasterPrize, you still have time. The Extended Final Deadline is August 31, 2020, so hurry! Check out our website for more details and to enter.⠀

Winning in two of our categories, Landscape Architecture/Installations & Structures, and Architectural Design/Small Architecture, Swirling Cloud: Bulletin Pavilion for BJFU Garden Festival was lovingly designed by SUP Atelier, and is a testament to the utter joy in design which can be achieved through ancient materials and modern technology.⠀
⠀
“A gale has risen and is sweeping the clouds across the sky.” Inspired by this famous verse in an ancient Chinese poem, the design team has presented a “pavilion of swirling clouds” for the garden festival of BJFU. Bordering a campus road, the site of the pavilion is a central square surrounded by woods, bushes, memorial stone carvings and benches. Modern building techniques, digital design technology and bamboo construction were integrated through pre-fabrication.⠀
⠀
@sup_atelier focuses on sustainable design and theory both in the fields of architecture and urban design, while highly promoting the combination of modern design and vernacular architecture in China.⠀
⠀

⠀
⠀
If you were thinking of entering the 2020 edition of the Architecture MasterPrize, whether with an architecture, interior design, or landscape architecture project, or perhaps our Architectural Product of the Year award, and you missed our deadline, we have very good news. Thanks to unprecedented interest and an acknowledgement of the difficulties we have all faced this year, we have decided to have an Extended Final Deadline of the end of August, 2020. The 31st of August will definitely be the final day of this year’s competition, so you still have time to enter! Please have a look at our website for more information!⠀
⠀
Designed by @messanaororke and winning in our Interior Design / Apartments Interior category, The Jewel Box is an innovative and smart answer to New York’s constant question of studio size solutions. Fantastic photography by Eric Laignel.⠀
⠀
The Jewel Box is a study of space efficiency, creating the illusion of a larger space through multiple experiences within a 430 square foot New York City ‘Studio’ apartment. The client’s wanted a pied-à-terre that felt like a room at a boutique hotel, a program that could accommodate cooking and entertaining and they did not want to see their bed. Our goal was to maximize the physical and atmospheric size of a singular space, its storage capacity while creating multiple experiences that all fit efficiently into an organized structure inspired by jewel boxes, steamer trunks, and boat interiors.⠀
⠀
⠀
⠀
⠀
Today is our Final Deadline, Friday the 31st of July. 2020! You still have time to enter, simply head to our website for more information and to do so. We can’t wait to share this year’s entries with our expert jurors, there are some incredibly, inspiring projects!⠀
⠀
Lycée Français Maternelle, designed by b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos, and winning in our Architectural Design/Educational Buildings category, is a colourful, curvy wonder. Inspiring photography by Simón García.⠀
⠀
The existing school was the result of the addition of temporary buildings over many years to two early twentieth-century villas. The formal resolution of the new building evokes the volumetric shapes of these villas through the rounding of its corners, establishing a formal relationship without necessarily subordinating itself to a historicist imitation. The new set brings forward a dialogue between the historical school and the new one. The chromatic and proportional game is the result of a useful and continuous dialogue with the client.⠀

⠀
This is Pavilion of Roads, designed by Groundwork Architects & Associates Ltd., and winning in our Interior Design/Exhibition category and a great example of how to use smart interior design to maximum — and FUN — effect.⠀
⠀
Groundwork was invited to design a pavilion at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre, in September 2018 for Road King, a Hong Kong real estate developer who started as a Chinese road-builder in the 1990s. The entire structure was made out of interconnected mini 4 wheel drive hobby cars tracks. The pavilion is not only a striking visual icon within the exhibition hall, it was also a portal for the guests to connect and mingle.⠀

Don’t forget! Friday the 31st of July, 2020 is our deadline! If you have a project you wish to enter into this year’s competition, then you still have time — the process is quick and simple, just head to our website and follow the instructions. We have received some remarkable projects this year and truly cannot wait to send them on to our expert jurors!⠀
⠀
This is Treehouse, a playful and enchanting example of the power of targeted architectural design. Lovingly created by Bo-Daa & Kolon Global Corporation, and winning in our Architectural Design / Residential Architecture category, do have a look at each photo to see the level of thought which went into this project.⠀
⠀
Treehouse is a 72-unit co-living house in the heart of Kangnam, the start-up hub of Seoul. Composed of micro-studios, it is designed for young professionals and their animal companions. The central atrium houses green landscapes and work areas, communal kitchen, laundry and pet baths. The six residential floors above each showcase different units - whether lofted sleeping quarters over an open soaking tub; a ladder of ledges to provide perches for feline residents; or a spacious penthouse for couples. A key unit detail is the slanted windows with blinds rising bottom-up for a view of the sky.⠀

A winner in our Architectural Design/Mixed Use Architecture category, this is Westbury TDC. Designed by @ntsikaarchitects, this project wonderfully demonstrates how architecture is truly crucial to a community, and it does so in a fun, sustainable, colourful, innovative, thoughtful, and, ultimately, wise way. Please, do take the time to look at all the photos!⠀
⠀
The Westbury Transformation Development Centre (TDC) is a mixed-use public building. The project focuses on developing an approach to engaging with marginalised communities in a meaningful, sustainable way. It seeks to create an innovative, locally fabricated architecture from a local palette of materials, using local skills. A generous public space in front of the building can be used by the community for various social activities. An indigenous acacia forest links the user to the landscape. A series of defensible internal courtyards are designed to create safe safe spaces within.⠀
⠀
Our deadline of July 31st, 2020 is rapidly approaching. If you have a project you wish to enter, head to our website to read more. We’ve already received a wealth of entries this year, with some outstanding works — our internationally renowned jury is in for a real treat/tough time choosing the winners!⠀
⠀
⠀
⠀
⠀
Good news! We have extended our deadline! You now have until the end of July to enter!⠀
⠀
Don’t forget, our international jury also decide on student winners of our Architectural Design of the Year Award. This design, ALFAMA 2.0 // RE-HABILITATION // RE-VITALIZATION // RE-STRUCTURATION by Maria Gonzalez Aranguren, is a strong example of what they are looking for. Winning in our Architectural Design/Heritage Architecture, Architectural Design/Residential Architecture, and Landscape Architecture/Urban Design categories, it was also our Landscape Design of the Year. It’s not hard to see why either, with such meticulous attention to detail accompanying the vibrant, innovative designs and ideas of this research project.⠀
⠀
Sometimes, when we think in the 21st Century city we imagine modern, new and high-tech buildings, but we forget about the historical centers of these cities. These are full of history and tradition, but in very poor condition and occasionally abandoned. This urban strategy project aims to address this problem through rehabilitation and reactivation of the oldest heritage district of Lisbon: ALFAMA, preserving it’s colorful tile facades, making it accessible for older people and transforming it into a mix used productive and residential area.⠀
⠀
⠀
⠀
⠀
Designed by DELUTION of Jakarta, Flick House is a winner in our Architectural Design / Green Architecture category, and neatly demonstrates smart ways to keep the interior cooler, reducing the need for less eco-friendly air conditioning.⠀
⠀
The initial idea for this project started from the memory of the childhood home of the client, in Central Java. A house with collective memories about light, air and materiality. These things are what the designer captured from the client’s tales. Based on these memories, the design developed around sensitivity and courtesy for materiality. There are five main concepts in this house: the use of brick as thermal insulation; the use of local materials for less of a carbon footprint; a secondary skin as a light mediator; cross ventilation and a water feature for a passive cooling system; vegetation as an ecosystem generator.⠀
⠀
If you have a project you wish to enter into the 2020 competition, don’t forget — the REGULAR DEADLINE is on June 30. Enter now!⠀

A generous public space in front of the building can be used by the community for various social activities. An indigenous acacia forest links the user to the landscape. A series of defensible internal courtyards are designed to create safe safe spaces within.⠀
