An existing heritage building has been transformed by JCB Architecture / @jcbarchitects through the introduction of a modern, two-storey addition that playfully re-interprets the distinctive geometry of the original dwelling through a contemporary lens.
Capturing abundant natural light and garden aspects, the new addition employs a refined and subtle palette of brick, steel, and timber. The two buildings are connected via a glazed link screened by hit-miss brickwork and a courtyard that celebrate the existing architecture and cascade into the landscape clearly separating the heritage building from the proposed contemporary extension.

Located in Shanghai, China, EVD office is conceived based on two design threads that derive from site restrictions. One extends from the entrance to the interior, while the other is folded out vertically in the 5-meter-high space. Due to site limitations, the position of the foyer determines the location of the entrance. In addition, the structural framework and the five orderly window openings define the placement of the wall.

Lantern House designed by Timmins+Whyte Architects / @timminswhyte_architects is a series of choreographed spaces with views to the outside from every angle. Ceiling volumes and textures were utilized to create zones. A double height void space connects the landscaped spaces to the east and west both visually and physically, and a balcony area becomes a part of the space to read or converse. The scale of the void is grand like the original heritage listed part of the house at the front. But unlike its Victorian, heavy dark street address the extension is a light, bright breathing space of calm.

The design intent for this barn-like structure by Studio Piet Boon / @studiopietboon was inspired by farms in the surrounding area to create a one-story office that breathes a homely, residential feel.
The square-shaped layout encloses a perfectly symmetrical patio with a tranquil water feature and provides significant privacy. The shape of the building and its large windows provide panoramic views over the surrounding golf course. The materialization of the interior has been consistently implemented and uses large amounts of natural stone. Throughout the building, soft and desaturated colors have been selected - the plastered walls in a light stucco beautifully feature the natural color of the wooden beams.

Surprising, light, and spatially attractive, this concrete split-level house designed by Jasper Smits Architectuur / @jaspersmitsarchitecture
is divided into 8 floors, separated by a void and connected by a carefully designed wooden staircase. The front garden of ZigZag, which is the main entrance of the building, creates a sufficient distance to the street and allows a much better and more agreeable floor plan. The common areas have been kept open to bring in the winter sun and let the warm southern light shine deep into the house.

Keeping the client as close to the project as possible and incorporating the natural elements from the outside world in, was the main objective for the Architects Bortolotto / @bortolottodesign. Provoking a sense of peace and tranquility that will sprout into a state of wellness has been at the root of their vision. As opposed to conventional rear yard recreational arrangement, Bézier Curve House arrays its program around the lap pool, empowering a swooping curve to define the front yard recreational space, and is comprised of wood construction, with moments of articulated heavy timber.
Inspired by the enduring, metal-paneled roof designs of Europe, the roof’s undulating, draping, fantastical “dragon scale” pattern was realized with RHEINZINK zinc panels / @rheinzink_international.

Straddling the old shoreline of the Rideau River, this contemporary custom home on Fentiman Avenue designed by Shean Architects / @sheanarchitects subtly nestles itself into the streetscape.
Retaining the area footprint of merely 600sqft of the previous home on the land, the design was further refined in response to its relationship with the beauty of the natural surroundings. The natural wood siding in its different applications encourages warmth and familiarity while using contemporary design. This provides the home to be both unique and complementary to the fabric of the existing neighbourhood.

For Chevallier Architectes / @chevallier_architectes, “Belles Échappées” offers a singular project with a sharp personal style. The two chalets were built on the basis of a concrete frame, dressed in wood and metal, allowing to integrate the responses to seismic constraints. This blend of materials enhances the design of this project with its high-end finishes.
