Dr. Anthony Fauci on Monday publicly urged the Trump campaign to take down a TV ad that uses his words out of context and without permission, emphasizing that he does not wish to get involved in politics. The Trump campaign ad, released Saturday, includes a clip of Fauci speaking during an interview with conservative Fox News host Mark Levin in late March. In the interview, Levin asked Fauci about the administration’s coordinated coronavirus response. In his answer, Fauci noted that he is “one of many people on a team” and spoke at length about the long hours that he and others in the administration have been putting in to fight the pandemic. “There’s a whole group of us that are doing that,” Fauci said. “It’s every single day. So I can’t imagine that under any circumstances, that anybody could be doing more. I mean, obviously, we’re fighting a formidable enemy, this virus.” Even though Fauci did not mention Trump in his answer, the Trump campaign clip is edited to make it appear as if the nation’s top infectious-disease expert is praising the president’s leadership during the crisis. Fauci said in a statement to CNN on Sunday that “the comments attributed to me without my permission in the GOP campaign ad were taken out of context.” Read more by clicking the link in our bio. hashtags

• Fewer than 900 of more than 19,000 fines given to people for breaching Victoria's coronavirus lockdown rules have been paid. New data from Fines Victoria shows 19,324 fines were issued until August 24, with the value of notices totalling $27,880,978. Only 845 of those fines have been paid in full. Fines Victoria said 18 per cent of the unpaid fines have reached the 'notice of final demand' stage.

• A black man who was led through the streets of a Texas town by two white police officers on horseback pulling a rope has sued the US city and its police department for $US1 million ($1.4 million), saying he suffered humiliation and fear during his arrest. A lawsuit filed last week in Galveston County district court on behalf of Donald Neely, 44, alleged the officers' conduct was "extreme and outrageous”, both physically injuring Mr Neely and causing him emotional distress. Photos of the August 2019 encounter showed Mr Neely being led by the officers on a rope linked to handcuffs — reminiscent of pictures showing slaves in chains. Mr Neely, who was homeless at the time, was sleeping on a footpath when he was arrested for criminal trespass and led around the block to a mounted patrol staging area. The charge was later dismissed in court.

• Online gamblers are blowing more money during the pandemic, with a new study revealing one in three signed up for new betting accounts in June and July. Men aged 18 to 34 made up 79% of new account holders, with the same group increasing their median monthly spend from $687 to $1,075, according to a study released by the Australian Gambling Research Centre today. Bookmakers said the rise in online spending came as revenue dipped at bricks-and-mortar betting venues.

Young people account for the majority of known Covid-19 infections, but the elderly account for most of the deaths.⠀
⠀
Mun Sim Lai, a population-affairs officer with the United Nations, analyzed data from 55 countries, including the U.S., and found that through Sept. 1, people who were 65 and older represented just 12% of confirmed coronavirus cases but 66% of deaths. Those who were 44 and younger accounted for 60% of known cases but only 7% of deaths.⠀
⠀
“It’s a social moral dilemma,” said Dr. Lai. “Young people get the virus and don’t die, but they are the ones spreading it to old people. This is true over the world.”⠀
⠀
That doesn’t mean younger people have gotten a free pass.⠀
⠀
While the raw number of deaths caused by Covid-19 is low for ages 25 to 44, mortality has increased by around 25% this year compared with the previous five years, according to data provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.⠀

In Michigan, a state where Democrats have long outnumbered Republicans, a win for Biden could come down to turnout in cities like Flint, and party leaders here say they’re hopeful that fewer people will stay home.
People in Flint really dislike Trump, Bryant Nolden, a Democratic county commissioner, said, and his narrow victory four years ago showed how even a small number of votes can make a big difference.
“People’s eyes are wide open now,” he said.
Angelette Moore, 57, a retired autoworker from Flint, stayed home in 2016 because she thought her vote “wasn’t going to matter,” she said.
“They’re going to do what they’re going to do anyway. Who cares?” she said.
But, this year, Moore said, she has already mailed her absentee ballot.
“Trump’s got to go,” she said. “He’s the devil.”

Democratic state Rep. Sheryl Kennedy believes support is swinging back toward the Democrats in Richfield Township in Genesee County, Michigan. But on a drive around the area last week, it was clear that support for Trump remains strong.
Many residents don’t just have Trump lawn signs. They have Trump billboards — massive signs about 6 feet across that can be seen from a block away. Others have Trump flags or banners.
David Martin, the Republican county commissioner who is running against Kennedy for state representative, said many voters he meets want to know whether he supports the president like they do.
“For so long, their identity, their grandfathers, their fathers, their selves, they were blue-collar labor, and they were voting Democrat,” said Martin, who is backing Trump.
“Now there’s a shift in voting for values,” he said, naming gun rights, property rights, and “traditional marriage,” among other issues. “I think they went with Trump because they were a little scared of how fast progressives were moving.”

Barb Proffer was once a reliable vote for Democrats in Michigan’s Genesee County. But when it came time for the last presidential election, she did not cast a ballot for Hillary Clinton. She crossed party lines to support Donald Trump.
“He speaks in a way that a lot of people don’t like but I personally do like,” said Proffer, 63, an accountant who said Trump was the first Republican she had ever voted for. As she and her adult son pulled into the parking lot of Richfield Township Hall in search of absentee ballots last week, she said she now views Democrats as “corrupt” and plans to vote only for Republicans from now on.
“I like a man that speaks the truth and doesn’t fluff it up,” she said.

The waters surrounding Britain are speckled with thousands of small islands, only a small fraction of which are inhabited, some by as few as one or two people.
“Among those who call Britain’s small islands home are a collection of wardens — caretakers who spend their lives in quiet solitude, away from the crowded corners of our urban world,” writes Alex Ingram. “Often employed by nonprofit conservation groups, their role is to maintain and manage the preservation of their small speck of land — its natural beauty, its wildlife — for future generations, often while conducting research into delicate ecosystems.”

One of Sen. Kamala Harris’ most powerful messages while speaking during Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing on Monday was also one of the most silent.
The Democratic vice presidential nominee prominently displayed a children’s book about the life of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as she spoke out against President Donald Trump’s nomination of Barrett to replace the legal and feminist icon.
The book, “I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark,” appeared over Harris’ shoulder while the senator vocally dissented against Barrett’s appointment, arguing that it jeopardizes everything Ginsburg fought to protect.
“Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg devoted her life to fight for equal justice and she defended the constitution,” Harris said. “She advocated for human rights and equality. She stood up for the rights of women. She protected workers. She fought for the rights of consumers against big corporations. She supported LGBTQ rights, and she did so much more.”

In the homestretch of the 2020 campaign, there has been little good news for President Trump. And that is showing up as an ominous turn for him in the polls as Biden consolidates support. What had been a steady national lead for Biden in the high single digits during the late summer has expanded to 12 points in early October, according to a Washington Post polling average. A Washington Post-ABC News poll released Sunday fits with the trend, putting Biden at 54 percent nationally and Trump at 42, a 12-point lead that is similar to the 10-point advantage Biden held in a September survey. While key battleground-state polls have shown a somewhat closer contest, the trajectory has been clear. Four years ago, voters who decided in the presidential campaign’s waning days broke decisively for Trump, a political newcomer, delivering him a shock victory. This year, evidence suggests there are few who have yet to make up their minds. But many of those who had been on the fence appear to be coming down on Biden’s side. The virus that causes Covid-19 can survive for up to 28 days on surfaces such as the glass on mobile phones, stainless steel, vinyl and paper banknotes, Australian scientists have found.
The national science agency, the CSIRO, said Sars-CoV-2 lasted longer on smooth surfaces rather than porous surfaces such as cotton, also surviving longer at lower temperatures.
However, the experiment was done in a dark area, nullifying the effects of UV light which is known to reduce the life of the virus on surfaces.
The research may help explain the apparent persistence and spread of Sars-CoV-2 in cool environments and how that might be better addressed. hashtags

Harper Wulms was 2 the first time she met Priscilla — a turkey with a rare condition that’s similar to the one she has. Harper, now 5, was born with symbrachydactyly, a congenital hand abnormality. Harper’s right hand is disproportionately small and is missing one finger. Her parents call it her “lucky hand.” The toddler tottered over to the turkey, her mother recalled, and the moment Harper understood the similarity between them, she smiled. The bond between Harper and Priscilla perfectly captures the reason Jamie Wallace-Griner started her animal sanctuary, Safe in Austin. Priscilla is one of more than 150 animals with a background of abuse, neglect or special needs that Wallace-Griner has rescued and cared for at her sanctuary. Beyond saving animals that, in most cases, would otherwise be euthanized, Safe in Austin also serves as a haven for people and animals with disabilities, special needs, mental health challenges and traumatic past experiences. Wallace-Griner was inspired to open an animal sanctuary upon witnessing the immense impact a service dog named Angel had on her autistic son, Jackson. Initially, friends of friends with special needs children would request to visit the sanctuary. As word got out, more people asked to come, and bonds continued to form between visitors and animals.
