“Smouldering On’ by Dorothea Smartt is one of twenty poems by Scottish and Caribbean based writers commissioned as an anthology for the 2014 Empire Café entitled ‘Yonder Awa’. The poems explore Scotland’s complex (and direct) involvement in the North Atlantic slave trade and the legacies of Empire. Dorothea recited her poem at the Café during the Games. LARGE-SCALE TRANSFORMATION, A NEW SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE
The @citedelarchi and @fundaciomies present in the frame of the laboratoire du logement 'Large-Scale Transformation, a New Sustainability Challenge', an exhibition which is an itinerary about guided by two winning works of the @eumiesaward that unfolds the complexity that surrounds this sort of large-scale housing blocks.
Three years ago, the renovation of one of the biggest apartment buildings in the Netherlands called was awarded with the . The Prize had never been won by a collective housing project until then. Just one year ago, a different group of jury members decided to award the 2019 Prize to the transformation of three social housing blocks in Bordeaux. In both cases, the existing buildings belonged to the wave of massive construction that happened in the 1960s in European cities. They are two successful survivors that escaped the wrecking ball.

Established in 1992, the Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme () has over the years differentiated itself from other international programmes with similar broad objectives for the and of cultural . Its repertoire of site conservation and socio-economic redevelopment activities follows a trajectory whereby traditional skills, that are directly related to the rehabilitation and conservation of historic monuments, are revived or, if needed, reintroduced.
The impact that conservation and restoration of cultural heritage sites has on the development of skills of members of the local community can be profound. It is for that reason that the Programme seeks to undertake projects whose scope of economic benefits far exceeds the short-term creation of employment in the sphere of restoration and related traditional crafts. Indeed, it is with an eye on the direct and indirect employment opportunities that arise from project implementation and future operation of historical sites, that individuals are trained in a wide scale of professions – or in skills upgrading of those already engaged in a particular profession – through Technical and Vocational and Training ().

Hanif Kureishi has such a wonderful way of dealing with some complex social issues around race, religion, sexuality and modern culture, painting the world through wonderfully colourful words and descriptions. GraceChoiArchitecture is a North East based, design oriented small practice. The practice works across all sectors, with emphasis on community projects, bespoke homes and public buildings.
Alongside practice, Grace teaches and mentors. She was Director and Trustee of the Mustard Tree charity for 7 years, a Manchester charity for the homeless and marginalized. She is currently part of the RIBAJ editorial panel and also sits on the RIBA NE Council as the elected Equality, Diversity and Inclusion champion, leading the Change The Record campaign. Manouchehri House in , , was shortlisted by the Aga Khan Award for Architecture Master Jury in 2016. See the presentation panels submitted for this . link in our bio (works best from a computer browser).
These are drawings, images, and text graphically prepared by the architect and submitted to the Aga Khan Award for Architecture during the later round of the Award cycle.
The portfolios are kept in the Aga Khan Trust for Culture Library for consultation purposes. Manouchehri House is a boutique hotel and textile centre located in the historic quarter of Kashan, in the province of . The project entailed the restoration of a 19th century merchant home, typical of the historic residential buildings of the area which have for the most part fallen into complete disrepair.
The initial purpose that informed the undertaking was threefold: the revival of historically significant hand-woven textile traditions of Kashan which were on the brink of extinction; the , and of a and its surrounding neighbourhood in order to draw attention to the vast treasury of this architectural heritage in danger; and raising awareness of the cultural, artistic and technological traditions embedded in the Islamic architectural traditions of this region. It houses not only the textile workshops for brocade, silk, cotton and velvet weaving, but also features the city’s finest dining establishment, a contemporary art gallery, a handicraft shop, and a subterranean movie house adapted from the original cistern of the old structure. The project has met with so much success that it has drawn thousands of people from across the world, and has triggered many similar initiatives across the city.

New Koper Urban Park is set between Piranska Road and the Semedela promenade, and between the Grande canal and the area just beyond the city market.
The key characteristic of the area is the immediate connection with the promenade and the sea, which is to be recognized as a significant spatial quality.
It order to encourage as much diversity in the use of its space, the new city park doesn't feature traditionally designed footpaths.

Sitting on a prominent site immediately adjacent to Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong West Kowloon Station serves as a gateway to Hong Kong as well as a terminus to the high-speed rail network of Mainland China.
The site's prominence immediately adjacent to the future West Kowloon Cultural District and next to Victoria Harbor required a design that was completely motivated by civic demand while much attention has been given to architectural layering and orientation, by the crew of @aedas_architects

Kenwood Lee House by @cousinsandcousins
Sitting curiously in the territory between a home for either a Bond hero or a Bond villain, outwardly this house carefully deconstructs and then re-assembles the trope of the grand suburban villa, with its eaves, ridges and gables. The rear façade, on the other hand, is an exercise in modernism, with a severe curtainwall of glazing interrupted only by a decorative frill of brise soleil.

We hugely enjoyed hearing from architectural historian Neal Shasore at our virtual event last night. Neal talked about our 1930s HQ building's complex relationship with the British Empire and race, and shone a light on the many individuals behind the building's design.
Miriam Wornum was a key figure in the development of the interior decoration, collaborating with her husband, the architect George Grey Wornum. Today we're sharing the story of the building, and what life was like on site, in her own words. This audio recording was captured at a RIBA event in 1984.
