This project combines ancient technologies with the Tel Aviv-Yafo well house network to create a cooling ventilation system that addresses urban heat.

In a new volume edited by Vincent Reina, assistant professor of city and regional planning at Weitzman, 14 scholars—including Weitzman’s Francesca Russello Ammon and Akira Drake Rodriguez—explore the problem and offer tools that, “if appropriately supported, can promote racial and economic equity in America.” ⠀

The Environmentorship Program strives to cultivate a collaborative space to strengthen the collective effectiveness of the sustainability community and provide resources for students to actualize their visions of a more equitable, socially just, and resilient future.
Mentors will help guide mentees to attain personal, academic, and career achievements in the field of environmental sustainability. The mentorship program will give both alumni and students a chance to engage with one another in meaningful discussions about sustainability and climate justice, as well as their personal goals.

POOL is the student magazine of the Department of Architecture & Urban Design at the University of California, Los Angeles.
POOL is driven by an interest in an expanding definition of architectural work that, in a culture of high volume content exchange, considers curation as a primary form of cultural production. Following this, we contend that the syllabus, the archive, and the aggregator are all valid forms of architectural work that we welcome and encourage in our publication.
POOL is a site of this type of work, experimenting with interface between its three primary platforms: event, digital, and print. Events and ongoing digital publication act not only as productive indicators of relevant themes, but also feed into an annual print edition.
POOL aspires to reach new audiences, seeing the separation of fields into hermeneutic discourses as unproductive, and strives instead for the inclusion of new and unexpected audiences through the incorporation of media unconventional to architectural discourse.
POOL is supported by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts with a grant for the year 2017. Partial funding provided by UCLA Graduate Students Association Publications.

The second Monday of October marks Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the commemoration of the indigenous peoples of North America. Woodbury School of Architecture acknowledges the first people of the ancestral and unceded territories that are now occupied by our two campuses - in Burbank/Los Angeles, our campus is located on Fernandeño Tataviam land. In Barrio Logan, San Diego, our campus is located on Kumeyaay land. Today, descendants are citizens of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians and the citizens of the Kumeyaay Tribe. We recognize that the members of these tribes are still here and we are committed to lifting up their stories, culture, and community.
The community of the present-day Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians (Band) originated in the lineages, villages and culture of the pre-Mission period. The Band is an independent nation, exercising its inherent sovereign authority over its tribal citizens and territory. Before the founding of Mission San Fernando, their ancestors in the region lived in autonomous lineages within villages.
The Kumeyaay (Iipai-Tipai-Diegueño) people have occupied the larger San Diego region for at least 12,000 years. The end of the Mexican-American War established the current US-Mexico border and divided California from Mexico. Moreover, it cut the international border through the heart of the Kumeyaay ancestral homelands. Today, 12 surviving North American Kumeyaay bands in the United States are recognized as sovereign tribes. Four Kumeyaay tribal communities survive south of the border in Baja California, Mexico.

Hidden Gem by Lauren Brown @laurrren.b (B.S. Arch 2021) Undergraduate Foundation Studio IV with Karen Van Lengen Spring 2020

Nested in the Historic arboretum behind the International Residential College, Hidden Gem seeks to be a cross cultural hub focused on international botany and foods as well as a space for "invisible students to feel visible" through the means of dispersed cultural learning centers. The key architectural move in the project is an overall ADA compliant slope where the building meets the historic arboretum and becomes one with the landscape. The L-shape of the building frames the arboretum around the permanent tree plantings on the site, creating an outdoor courtyard and garden for IRC residents + visitors to inhabit. An activation pathway is created between Hidden Gem and the site's faculty house at Historic Morea to enable a living learning environment between existing IRC Principle and the potential occupiers of the site. The building is supported by a concrete structure with a green sedum roof. In an effort to be in conversation with the site, the outdoor patios, walls and building cores are constructed with red clay brick, and the facade is an interplay of glass and wood paneling in honor of the historic arboretum.

The installation will be on view from October 12-19, from sunrise to sunset. There is a public opening on Monday, October 12, at 1:00pm. Face coverings and social distancing are required.⠀

The Scribe and the Labyrinth

The course started with a discussion about everyday, the way we identify it through various tropes such as rituals, conversations, dreams, myths etc.
These tropes were extracted from existing practices and were then used as a basis for an archival practice. The course used the trope of the 'Scribe' to investigate and rigorously document the narrative of the everyday, the poltics of the personal, our interdependencies, our patterns of consumption, in order reflect on the world around us. It also involved critiquing the commodification of everyday where each process is performed in order to produce an end result.

”This thesis proposes an architecture that takes on performance based operations found in the art and tectonic practices of repairing and reusing broken and derelict ceramic parts: at the scale of a vessel (such as in Kintsugi); and at the scale of a building (such as in Spolia). These processes were folded into scenographic performances undertaken by myself in two ways: 1/ molding and casting; 2/ 3D scanning and imaging. These performances are a series of visual and material experiments; a method for recycling, and re-identifying existing ruins on a chosen site in Coso Valley.
Although the site is off limits to the public, documentary scenes of the hot springs (archival film, 1930, Somewhere on the Edge of Nowhere, 2005, Talking Stone, Rock Art of the Cosos, 2014) were collected and interpolated as forensic data and topographical evidence. By extracting and compositing archival postcards, documentary sequences, USGS Lidar scans, the resulting scenography is a superimposition of history with materiality; an extraction of an atmospheric yet tactile terrain.

Alternative Institutions by Omer Gorashi @gorashiarch (B.S. Arch 2021) New York Undergraduate Foundation Studio with Seth McDowell @a.seth_mcdowell Fall 2019
This project is an alternative institute of sorts, in which people are not shunned away for trying to stay out of the rain or rest on a park bench. The institution was created as a photography guild where street photographers throughout the city can assemble and have a physical space to engage one another. The institution offers spaces for photographers to shoot, teach and learn, publish and curate their work for the public. Members of this guild also have spaces to then teach displaced populations this medium of such clear-cut representation and art, so that they too can use photography to be their voice in a conversation that they for so long have been prevented from joining in on. The guild is meant to welcome all members of the city, even those who are just visiting, providing hygenic (bath house), nutritional (community kitchen) and medical (clinic) amenities to all.

"'(e)motion library' is a platform that allows participants to playfully, artistically, and anonymously share their mental health concerns. Users can choose one of the many styles available on the platform, going from slightly anonymous, to completely obscure. Through built-in software, '(e)motion library' changes participants' voices and faces, allowing them to anonymously share their truth. Users are also given access to resources in their area, easily allowing them to book appointments with mental health professionals, or find support groups. Sheltering Idiosyncrasies of Home spaces

The course began by focusing on the current practices of housing which are dominated by the ideas of redevelopment resulting in the house type following a common cookie cutter template of x X y size.This transforms the lived experience and socio-cultural practices for people who live and interact very differently otherwise. Hence the modern ready-made house is rigid and morphs the way people make home.
The aim of this module was to study the home and home-making practices across various housing typologies. Through documentation and drawings of our own homes we identified how practices shape the unit, the cluster as well as the neighborhood.
We dug into the question of ethnography of the home and neighborhood and the factors that a 'type' can afford such as visual connection, audibility , security etc.
The four soft parameters were-
1.Possessibility- the idea of owning a space.
2. Occupiability- how members of a family inhabit the space they call home.
3.Sociability- the social interactions afforded by each type -spaces where chance encounters occur.
4.Penetrability - the transforming nature of public vs. private spaces in each type.

Details of a super tall building by Yuxin Hu @yuxinnnnnnnnnnnn completed during the Super Tall course led by Nicole Dosso.
The class follows an analytical approach by dissecting individual Super Tall building components and their interrelationships to each other to build a comprehensive understanding of how these buildings behave using New York City as a laboratory. Student teams are assigned one of the following categories: vertical circulation, enclosure and building maintenance; super structure; building services including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing; fire and life safety; and construction logistics. Each team develops a series of three‐dimensional infographics that visually represent the categorical fundamental building blocks of the Super‐Tall.

Rice Architecture Fall 2020 Lectures are part of an initiative to acknowledge, understand, and act on systemic racism in the built environment. Invited designers, scholars, and activists will speak on the relationship between race, architecture, and, by extension, related questions of social equity, environmental justice, and gender parity. The aim of the lecture series is to foreground these issues in the school’s curriculum while more broadly fostering solidarity and action in architecture.

Unlike cities such as New Haven, where centralized public space is a municipal function, Lowell levies canal and river front property to position the enclave as an integral spatial configuration.
We propose a re-imagination of the enclave and cloister morphologies as a flexible porous structure and focuses on areas adjacent to the downtown and Hamilton Canal District with latent possibilities to induce mixité and inclusion.
Like a Gilles Clement landscape, our architecture speculates that the city of Lowell can be set in motion to cultivate emergent behaviors over an indeterminate space of time.

I chose these colors because they are bright and eye catching- and just personal favorites. I overlayed it onto Wurster Hall because I wanted to introduce the idea of adding color onto a structure or architectural style that has traditionally favored homogeneity, which has been used to standardize places and spaces.
At Landscope we want to play with the colors of the landscape, literally and metaphorically, so we can emphasize and celebrate the unique colors of a space.

Here's some handmade Zooming: Industrial Design professor Martha Sullivan (@marthasulli) demonstrates a throwing technique for her Empty Bowls class in a streaming class. Taking place in the newly adapted pottery studios in Burchard, VT Empty Bowls (@vt_emptybowls) is a partnership with Plenty! food bank this fall for the 14th annual Tour de Dirt bike ride and chili dinner on October 25th. All proceeds raised will go to relieve food insecurity in our region. Stay tuned for an on campus Empty Bowls exhibition in November. Each bowl is handmade to fight hunger.

Baltimore Off Ramp by Mary Wright @marywright_ (B.S. Arch 2019) Addictive Things Domino Sugar Advanced Research Studio with Shiqiao Li @li_shiqiao Fall 2018
I began the research on sugar addiction by looking at the metabolic and neurological processes behind our addiction. Much of this has to do with the cycles of dopamine in the brain, whether it has to do with sugar addiction or drug abuse. This project aims to be the production of a more healthy and beneficial dopamine high through intensive and adrenaline filled exercise coupled with the regeneration of a healthy body and mind.
Above, it is an intensive active landscape and below, a space for purification filled with steam and sensory experiences. The project strives for recuperation, regeneration and re-framing of the mind and body against the backdrop of century old sugar production. Located adjacent to the Domino Sugar factory in Baltimore Maryland, it cuts out into the water to reframe the consumerist inner harbor. It looks both to the traditions of the Roman Bathhouse and the processes of sugar purification to create a new public space for Baltimore and create this new high.

GUEST LECTURER: Brooklyn-based artist and designer Olalekan Jeyifous (B.Arch. '00) whose work often re-imagines social spaces around issues that explore the relationship between architecture, community, and the environment.
Jeyifous has spent over a decade creating large-scale artwork for a variety of public spaces. He was commissioned, with collaborator Amanda Williams, to create a monument for Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm as part of the City of New York’s “She Built NYC” initiative. His banner wrap for the Corcoran Garage in Durham, North Carolina received the Americans for the Arts Public Art Network Year in Review Award in 2019. He has also created a 50ft-tall sculpture for the 2017 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and 4 large sculptures for Public Square in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

In Dawn Finley’s 501 studio in fall 2019, students were asked to design a branch library for East Downtown, Houston. In Adam Berman’s project, he proposes that libraries are full of contradictions. From expansive reading rooms to compressed stacks, analog to digital technologies, commercial to domestic building types, libraries present a fascinating merging of opposing entities. In his library design, he was interested in using architectural moves to clarify these inherent contradictions in order to present a building that is both readable and highly functional.
The site in East Downtown Houston exists between a historic residential neighborhood and a rapidly gentrifying commercial thoroughfare. The pitched roof typology of the residential buildings became an important starting reference. From this initial point, he performed a series of operations in order to create patterns that engage the contradictory qualities inherent in the library type.

With an AI neural network as a collaborative partner, this project speculates on an adaptive landscape response to sea level rise in New York City.

The project is proposed on Governors Island (GI), on a site that is currently slated for development. GI is a rich ground for speculative architecture in that the island itself is both part natural, part synthetic, at once historic and contemporary, terrestrial and aquatic. Partnering with style-transfer algorithms, and using a combination of tectonic and biological inputs, the island and development zones are refeatured to examine new features and edges on the site, and thus a new relationship with the water.

Rather than mitigating an encroaching waters edge, this infrastructural system adapts and works symbiotically with the water. A tectonic filtration system augments the existing function of a salt water marsh - a proposed habitat that would make up a large portion of the site. Salt water marshes are regularly flooded ecosystems made up of dense, multi-stemmed plants which absorb water and accrete sediment to build land base. Grasses such as spartina alterniflora filter water to accumulate sediment enabling other habitat-engineering species, such as mussels, to settle.

This filtration system is imitated throughout the site to filter water of toxins and debris, creating clean areas to study and recreate at the water’s edge. High grasses provide refuge for animals and submerged landscape features create protected habitat for marine species.
The project is a hybrid of natural and tectonic systems; architectural components mimic the function of the former to create a permeable landscape protected by breakwater barriers and divided into many microecosystems.

Today is our Core I Jump Cut review, so we are looking back at Min Sung Kim's @m.i.n.s.u.n.g.k.i.m (MArch I '23) project design from last fall. Studio Instructor: Elle Gerdemann @ellegerdemann. The assignment asks for the interpretation and reinvention of a building from seemingly incompatible section drawings.
"This project creates a continuity between the two sections in plan, using four loops that can accommodate discrepancies and generate heterogeneity. The loose figures of four loops resemble one another, generate continuity by tangency, and accommodate discrepancy in programmatic organization. The tangency of the box to the looping figures allows for peeling without breaking the continuous surface that binds the misaligned floor levels. The figures being a two dimensional shape inherits a level of freedom to create a collage of conditions, such as a circulation space, a single room, or a series of rooms that composes a sub-residence. The figure as a generative diagram liberates architecture from a singular space making strategy and allow for the jump from one paradigm to another within one snapshot."🔗Learn more hgsd.us/projects

Housing/Urbanization 2020-2021
Theorizing housing practices in India's second cities
~
The course explores emerging contexts of urbanizations in second cities of India, shaping their housing demands, the spatialities of house and home and the institutional mechanisms for their provision. What are the theoretical frameworks that help advance a study of housing practices that emerge from such concerns? The following are the theoretical frames that are central to the course discussion.
1. Emerging contexts, housing is more than a number. India’s housing demand is widely assessed through demographic datasets. This assessment fails to capture new aspirations, shifts in cultural practices and the claims of racial, ethnic, religious, caste, gender and age difference towards the built environment.
2. Spatiality, Home is more than a house.
The folding of the house, housing and home onto the physical space of neighborhoods and environments often produces a series of spatial specificities such that the built form is either able to or unable to absorb, various facets of individual and collective life in the emerging contexts of urbanization.
3. Institutional Mechanisms
Housing as a large scale techno managerial process where in various institutions partake such as regulators, bankers and infrastructure developers towards the social goal of providing dwelling units to stakeholders.
The following emerging contexts that were identified are:
1. Influence of IT sector on Rental Housing
2. Urban Mobility and Investment Housing
3. Transforming Tourism and Tourist Accommodation
4. Housing Yoga Learners and Tourists
5. Transforming Agraharas
6. Mobility Instruction and Urban renewal of old Market Precincts
7. Transforming Park
8. Housing Government Employees
9. Housing University and Post University Students
10. State Housing for Low Income Group
A research question was conducted on housing within the emerging contexts of urbanization in India’s second cities. These inquiries were situated and methodologically conducted within the wider debate by developing analytical and visual representation capacities to diagram the housing design experiments.

‘Where Turtles Fly’ is a third-person indie game by SCI-Arc EDGE graduate Andre Zakhya (Fiction and Entertainment ‘20), capturing the story of a young refugee boy who has fallen over the side of a boat. He washes up on the shore of a city that doesn’t want him, and with just a phone, his only connection to his loved ones, he begins a journey to find a new home.
Created from 3D scans of Beirut, a city with the highest rate of refugees in the world relative to its population, the young boy travels between fantasy and reality, traversing a surreal urban landscape of surveillance drones, watch towers, and monsters of trash.
@andrezakhya is a recipient of this year’s Hsinming Fung and Craig Hodgetts Postgraduate Thesis Prize for the best postgraduate project of the year. (Advisor: @liam_y & @alexey.marfin)
